Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Wormburner Guitar Preamplifier ?

It is a very high input impedance, low distortion and fast small signal amplifier. It is a buffer with gain, which enables it to drive different loads. The Wormburner Guitar Preamplifier allows guitars with passive pick-ups to be used with guitar amps and any line level gear without loading the pick-ups output. It does not add any effects or distortion.

What is loading?

Loading, in the case of guitar pick-ups, is when the pick-up has to supply more current than it can. Let me explain. As a pick-up is a long piece of wire wound on a magnet, when sound hits it, it generates a voltage. This voltage will cause current to flow. Depending on what the input impedance is of the device the pick-up sees, current has to be supplied. Usually, the less current the pick-up has to supply, the better the tone will be, and the sustain will be greater. However, the more current the pick-up has to supply, tone will be dull and sustain will be much shorter.

In what situation does the Wormburner Guitar Preamplifier work best?

The data I have indicates that the Wormburner Guitar Preamplifier works best with guitars with older pick-ups. The preamp works well in driving line level inputs. The preamplifier works well with emulated outputs on guitar amps as well.

Does the Wormburner Guitar Preamplifier work with all guitars?

Yes it does. The results are different from one guitar to the next, as well as, one amp to the next. There’s no way to know what the result will be. Sometimes the output can be too much. If needed a volume pedal can be used after the preamplifier. Can also be used with acoustic and bass guitars.

Any other uses for the Wormburner Guitar Preamplifier?

They can be used with microphones, or, as feed amps. Can be used for reamping as well. It is a good small signal amplifier with uses I don’t know about yet.

Are there custom preamplifiers?

Yes, custom preamps can be made. Some of the options are listed below.

There could be more options. Those listed are options that have been installed in preamps previously built. If you have any questions not touched on here, please call or email us. There is a section on the website to let us know what your comments are. Thank you for visiting WormburnerAudio.com.
